How much revenue do you generate from Google Adsense? Recently there has been a lot of discussion about people who earn over $10,000 a month just from Adsense. Furthermore, there are rumors of a few individuals who earn over $1 million a year just from using the power of Google advertisements. So what is Google Adsense and how can you use this program to earn a six-figure income? About two years ago, Google created this program to help websites to monetize their web-traffic. Here's how it works: Webmasters obtain a special code from Google which then displays targeted ads on their website. Whenever a visitor clicks on one of these ads, the webmaster earns a commission. Unlike other online businesses, there is no selling involved. All you need to do is get people to click on the ads. Although this is an excellent way to generate an income, many websites are not effectively maximizing their Adsense potential. As a result, they are leaving a lot of cash on the table. The question is how can you increase your Adsense revenue without increasing the number of web visitors? The key to earning an income with Google Adsense is to have your ads match the rest of the site, making them look like part of your content. Your focus is to avoid having the Adsense blocks look like blatant advertisements. The following are six ways that you can do this and increase your revenue at the same time: 1) Find the right place- Most website visitors read content that is in the middle of a webpage. As a result, the best place to put your Adsense block is in the top part of the page, at the beginning of your web content. You want to weave the Google Ads into your web content to give the appearance that they are extra links which expand on the information of the page. 2) Use the Large Rectangle-With Google Adsense, you have the option of picking different ad formats. Most of the time people opt to use the Leaderboard (728x90) or Wide Skyscraper (160x600) style ads. Unfortunately, this is the wrong choice, because both look like blatant advertisements. Instead smart webmasters have found that using the Large Rectangle (336x280) yields the best amount of click-thrus. 3) Ditch the border- Many people experience a sharp increase in Adsense revenue when they changing their border. What they change is very simple…they get rid of the border on their Adsense blocks. This is another way to make the advertisements look like useful web content. 4) Adapt the font- Whenever you write content, it should be the same font size and style as your Google Adsense block. This will help make it appear that the advertisements are a natural part of your website. 5) Match the colors- In addition to changing the fonts, you also should match the colors of your website. For instance, if your content is written in black, and your hyperlinks are blue, then the Adsense blocks should also be the same color. Again, this helps the advertisements appear to be normal web content. 6) Don't have ...

Interview Transcript
Eric Enge: Can you tell me what your responsibility is within Google?
Josh Cohen: I am the business product manager for Google News. I work with other folks on the news team, on figuring out what is our roadmap, what are the features that we are working on, what we want to do with the product in the next 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and so on.
A big focus of my job is really working with people outside of Google; so talking to publishers, talking to people in the media and at conferences; just putting a face on Google News and trying to demystify it as much as possible. I also work with a lot of the different cross-functional teams who interact with publishers on a day-to-day basis and try to tie those efforts together a little bit better.
Eric Enge: Tell us what Google News is and what it does, and who uses it.
Josh Cohen: Google News was launched in beta back in 2002. The idea behind Google News is really similar to what we are trying to do in search. Not to throw the company mantra at you, but, it really is about organizing all the news information out there and making it even more accessible and useful for users.
We are trying to do this in every single country, and in every different language. We want as many different sources as possible, so that when people are looking for that information, they can find it. The interest in news overall is probably higher than it has ever been. More and more people are getting this online, and so the challenge is trying to find that information and to provide some context and organization. So, we really are operating as a search engine specifically for news.
Eric Enge: How do you define news versus other types of content?
Josh Cohen: We really try and keep as much as possible as black or white, and we don't get into qualitative discussions about the nature of the news site. We don't include any hate speech and pornography. What ...
In another clear indication of Facebook ’s ever-increasing growth in the internet arena, Facebook surpassed Google last week as the most visited site in the United States. According to a report by Hitwise Intelligence , Facebook surpassed Google for the week ending 13th March. According to the report, Facebook last week accounted for 7.07% of the US market share, which is just a shade above that enjoyed by Google (7.03%). Even more impressively, Facebook’s traffic was up 185% this year as compared to the same week last year. The corresponding figure for Google, on the other hand, was a mere 9%.
While Facebook has achieved the number 1 ranking for standalone days in the past, notably Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, this is the first time that it has achieved it for a complete week. In fact, it is the first time since the week ending Sept. 15, 2007 that Google has come in second.
Coming, as it does, in the wake up of the failure of many of Google’s recent initiatives, notably Wave and Buzz and the gradual loss of market for Orkut in India and to some extent Brazil, the going seems to be getting harder for Google.
While the web has been abuzz with the news of Facebook’s demise with the emergence of Twitter , these statistics clearly show otherwise. Google, in its quest to be a balance between Facebook and Twitter, has ended up being neither. Facebook, on the other hand, has grown from strength to strength.
This report confirms what has been conjectured for long. People are now more likely to be spending time on Facebook than Google. This will lead to a marked shift in the advertising policies of many companies. Companies are now more likely to spend on advertising on Facebook, rather than Google. Also, this report may further boost traffic to Facebook, as people are more likely to be wanting to be a part of a popular venture.
What remains to be seen is whether this was a one-time blip on Google or Facebook’s domination is here to stay.
PS: Please note these are US statistics and in India Google pretty much rules the roost !

There’s no doubt Google has a sense of humor — its excellent April Fools jokes are a testament to that. But there’s a wealth of funnies that can found any time of the year too. Here we pull together a handy list of Google “Easter eggs” that you can uncover right now. Bearing in mind we’re working up another list covering surprises that can be found in Google Maps, Earth and Street View, have we missed any other tricks from those crazy Google funsters? Do share in the comments below. 1. Try a Different Version of the Google Homepage Sure, Google’s doodles make the famously sparse homepage a little more funky on certain days, but there are ways to jazz it up any day with some homepage tricks that will turn your search base into a pirate-, Klingon- or even Swedish Chef- themed online property. Most of these work by entering an exact search term and then hitting the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. There’s a ton of these, some of which have been active for a while. Google nods to open source software with Linux- and BSD devil-themed options that can be activated by typing “google linux” and “google bsd” then hitting the IFL button. Those partial to a bit of grog meanwhile can get their Google homepage pirated by doing the same with “xx-pirate.” Google will display in “hacker-speak” if you type in “google l33t.” The Klingon version can be found with “xx-klingon,” and if you want some bork with your Google, enter “xx-bork” to go all Muppet Show. Even more options include pig latin (“xx-piglatin”), an Easter egg-themed page complete with bunny mini-game (“google easter egg”), and a dark gothic way to search (“google gothic”). Typing “elgoog” offers Google backwards, and there’s an Elmer Fudd tribute at “ewmew fudd.” Finally, it’s not quite a whole homepage change, but entering “ascii art” will make the Google logo display in that style. 2. See Quirky Calculator Results While the few funny answers Google offers via its Calculator app don’t quite top the amusement to be had by typing 5318008 into your upside-down elementary school calculator, they are nonetheless another sign that the search giant doesn’t take itself too seriously. Case in point — searching for the number of horns on a unicorn makes the Calculator app spring into life with the answer “1,” which is the same number it returns if you ask Google what the loneliest number is. Searching for “once in a blue moon” brings up “1.16699016 × 10-8 hertz.” And, always a classic, searching for “the answer to life, the universe, and everything” will trigger the Calculator display “42,” which we all know is a reference to Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Ga ...

Number 5 for Google!
It is becoming extremely hard to say the word acquisition without a ‘Google’ trailing along somewhere. On April 2nd, these words rang true once again as Episodic announced, on its blog , that it will be joining the Google family.
Episodic is a web enabled platform that allows its users(publishers and marketers) to host, stream their content. It also offers analytics and monetization solutions. It recently forayed into the mobile video space with an app for iPhone, apps for other platforms are on the cards too. The next web believes that this a precursor to a pro version of Youtube. Given that Youtube only has revenue sharing deals with some individual networks, and is locked in a legal battle with some others – a pro version of its video hosting platform will provide a way for several smaller content creators to monetize their content.
According to Episodic’s blog service to current users will remain unaffected however they have suspended new accounts for the time being. Google’s latest acquisition comes on the heels of its March shopping spree during which it picked up Picnik and DocVerse. While it’s Admob deal is yet to be approved by regulators, the company is currently overshooting Eric Schmidt’s estimation of 1 acquisition per month – with 5 in this calendar year already.
Facebook makes Divvyshot an offer they could not refuse…
What started off as a regular fund raising round for Divvyshot – a Y-Combinator powered startup turned into something a lot sweeter . Facebook walked in with a takeover bid that was too good to turn down(terms not disclosed).
Divvyshot is a photo sharing website that approaches this service from a different angle. It allows group sharing of photos and albums. This effectively means that the same ‘Event’ will have one album where multiple users can upload files. Other features that set it apart are high resolution images that are available for download without any loss in quality. The ability to download entire albums at a time as a single zip file. Facebook has been looking to incorporate this event tagging feature among others to its photo sharing application – Facebook Photos.
It is clear that this a talent acquistion for the world’s largest social networking site. CEO Sam Odio and his two employees will join Facebook as part of the team that works on Facebook Photos, which sees 2.5 – 3 billion uploads a month. Predictably the 40,000 member strong service will be shutdown. Existing users will be given 6 weeks to migrate their photos to other photosharing networks. Odio has reportedly stated that the team is “working on the specifics of migration of photos to other photo-sharing services.” A betting man would place his money on Facebook being the first such service.

Google held a press event to announce the most "buzzed" topic of the week - Google Buzz . This is Google's new product, which is being compared to social networks like Twitter and Facebook. It is integrated with Gmail and other Google products, and appears to be one of the missing links in tying Google together as a social network, a concept we've discussed repatedly.
Do you think Google could make an impact on social media with this release? Share your thoughts .
Editor's Note: The bulk of this article was written before the announcement was made and has been adjusted to reflect the announcement itself, after liveblogging the press event.
Google says Buzz has five key elements:
1. Auto Following
2. Rich, Fast Sharing experience...
3. Support for public and private sharing....
4. In-box integration
5. Just the good stuff...
Watch the video below to get a general idea of what Buzz does.
Buzz will show a thumbnail of a YouTube video and make it easy to play in line. With photos, they will show thumbnails, but Google built a custom photo viewer, which lets you flip through pictures and see them "big and fast". If you share links, it will automatically fetch headlines and photos from the post (similar to Facebook). You can "like" and "unlike" stuff, and expand comments. It works with keyword shortcuts from Gmail.
Public/Private sharing - The post box will let you post updates publicly or privately. If it's public, it will go to your Google profile , and is indexed by Google's real-time search. You can share privately, and it will let you send to groups and custom groups.
In your in-box , you will see buzz notifications that contain real-time comments. It sits in the same in-box as your regular email, but you can move between your regular in-box and your Buzz stuff. It integrates it right into Gmail. You can also use "@" for replies like with Twitter.
While Google Buzz is presented as a Gmail feature, it goes well beyond Gmail. For one, all public updates you post will be posted to your Google profile page, (which is searchable). In addition, Google launched three new mobile products for Buzz:
1. The ability to use Buzz from www.Google.com on iPhone/Android
2. Brand new app at buzz.google.com
3. Maps Update for Nokia Symbian/ Android.
Mobile could be one of the biggest keys to the success of this product. Google says Google.com is the world's most popular mobile home page, and Buzz can be accessed from there on iPhone and Android devices. Android's popularity is growing quickly too.
Buzz will find your location (if you let it) and snap your updates to that location. With the Google Maps feature, you can see what people are saying based on location. You can ...
April Fools Day is upon us, and that means of course that you'll be fed lies all day long. It's an interesting day, particularly in the tech, news, and tech news industries, where even companies get in on the fun. Google is no stranger to April Fools tom foolery, and they've got a number of silly announcements up today.
Tell us what your favorite Google April Fools prank is (past or present).
First, the most noticeable one: Google has changed its name to Topeka , in honor of Topeka, Kansas recently announcing it would change its name to Google, to get in on Google's experimental ultra-high-speed broadband project .
"We didn’t reach this decision lightly; after all, we had a fair amount of brand equity tied up in our old name," says Topeka CEO Eric Schmidt. "But the more we surfed around (the former) Topeka’s municipal website, the more kinship we felt with this fine city at the edge of the Great Plains."
He also says the initiative "will have no bearing on which municipalities are chosen to participate" in the broadband project.
Google announced a new mobile search feature called, "Where am I?". Go to Google.com on your phone and search "where am I" it will tell you your location. When I checked, I was in Mordor, Middle Earth.
"Note that in this alpha release, we are finding that our results can be slightly off," says Google software engineer John Eric Hoffman. "However, accuracy should improve with greater usage. So if at first the answer is not what you’d expect, please continue to try it over the next couple of days and ask your friends to do the same."
Google launched Google Romance , which let's you "pin all your romantic hopes on Google."
"When you think about it, love is just another search problem. And we’ve thought about it. A lot," the company says. It offers users the following: uploading your profile, meeting your soulmate, contextual pre-date advertising, meeting for drinks, the main course, unexpected results, contextual dating advice, and contextual courtship.
Google Voice introduced standard voicemail mode with features like:
- Automatic voicemail deletion
- Numeric keypad access
- Beeper interoperability
- Message maximums
- Numeric page
Google Wave introduced Google Wave wave notifications , which features a human coming up to you and waving to you when you have a new wave.
YouTube introduced TEXTp , a way to watch YouTube videos in text-only mode, to save YouTube bandwidth and money.
Google announced you can now upload and store anything in the cloud with Google Docs. "For example, do you ever wish you could CTRL+F your house keys or ...
Apps marketplace seems to be the new fad be it mobile apps or web apps. The latest one to join this bandwagon is none other than Google Apps for enterprises . Google Apps in the last three years has reached over 2 million businesses across the globe and hence this new app marketplace is an important addition to its offering. We have discussed earlier on how we think that the future of computing is the browser and how IT co’s in India are going the cloud way .
Cloud computing is the future and no one can deny that. Prasad Ram of google had spoken about the prospects in the recently held Nasscom Conclave on Cloud Computing.
Th new app marketplace will allow Google Apps customers to easily discover, deploy and manage cloud applications that integrate with Google Apps. More than 50 companies are now selling applications across a range of businesses:
Some of these are Intuit Online Payroll , Zoho projects , Bookfresh . The beauty about these apps is that they integrate with several services of google seemlessly and almost work like google products.
Also the issue of multiple ids is take care of with OpenID integration.
Boon for SME’s
The SME market is huge in India and this launch by google is clearly aimed at the SME segment the world over. This launch would surely position Google as a serious player in the medium level enterprise software services even in the Indian market. The ease of use and the penetration of google products would make sure that Indian businesses start subscribing to this service. All in all once again google will rule the Indian web space but this time from an enterprise perspective.

Recently, Google finished unveiling its latest ’social innovation’ at an event held at their Mountain View Headquarters. Google Buzz! Social Networking is clearly the buzz word on the Internet and with Orkut, OpenSocial struggling to keep up with the likes of Facebook and Twitter, Google is looking to this new product to match them. Given that mobile web is that other exciting area, Buzz has been developed with a strong mobile element.
The Gmail Part
Gmail already has a huge user base about 176 million unique visitors per month (source:comScore) and Google is cleverly tapping into this base by adding Buzz to Gmail. When it is eventually rolled out to everyone, you will see a Buzz just below Inbox. Like any other Social Network, Buzz is essentially a stream of updates. Except that is not limited to status updates alone. It supports Inline video viewing and Images as well. It also takes advantage of the open web and can link up with Google Reader, Picasa, Flickr and Twitter. It does not yet allow you to update Twitter, but Google hinted that this may be possible in the future.
Privacy options can be set to share your updates with everyone or to a select group of people. Buzz aims to make your life simpler by auto-following people you interact with regularly over email/chat. Only drawback here is it can end up following people who may not necessarily be on your social radar (your Boss?). Google’s mission is ‘to organize the world’s information’, so why should the Social Web be an exception? It is believed that Buzz will filter(autohide) content that does not get commented on, thus only showing you the ‘good stuff’.
For updates that do get commented on, Buzz makes sure you wont miss out anything thanks to real time updates and email alerts. It also allows you to reply directly from your inbox. You can direct comments at someone by using @ tags, and they will be notified via emails too. Buzz also recommends updates from people you do not follow based on whether it thinks that a certain Buzz will interest you or not.
Buzz on your Mobile
It is hard to imagine any social feature succeeding without a mobile dimension and Google is certainly not taking any chances. It will be accessible from Google’s Mobile Website, Buzz.Google.Com (on Android and iPhone) and Google Maps. When you Buzz on-the-go you can add location tags to your updates(Foursquare checkins?) or even read what your friends have said about a place. This is different from Google Latitude in that it relies on Naming the place instead of its coordinates.
Scope?
Despite being a fairly decent collaboration tool, Google Wave suffered due its ‘perceived complexity’ hopefully Buzz will sidestep that problem. Buzz is a very ambitious project by Google. While it does seem to have all the raw materials(borrowed and not) that could go into making a great social tool, whether it delivers as a finish ...
The huge Google Books fiasco began in 2004 , when Google ambitious tried to recreate a digital Library of Alexandria. The aim, to scan and place on the Internet, every book that they could have access to, create a huge repository of books and printed material, that could be scanned and searched for from anywhere across the globe.
The idea started in 2004. The aim : The democratization of Information. Which goes very well with Google’s “Don’t be Evil” Philosophy .
By March 2007, Google had digitized one million books, at an estimated cost of US $5 million. As of 2009, Google has scanned over 10 million books. Some are “full preview” books, others allow only snippets or certain pages to be visible.
The benefits : Scan and/or preview a book before buying it. OR Read the Book for Free (the free / preview option is based on a settlement between publishers)
Unfortunately the deal went awry. Scouting the scope for potential violation of Law and Copyright Infringement, a series of lawsuits followed. The Authors Guild v/s Google and the Association of American Publishers v/s Google in 2005.. A partial agreement was settled upon in 2008 for a model by which Authors could gain revenue. However, there were a lot of hitches. There was of course the issue of Global / Local Copyright. Then, there was the issue of giving Google sole control over such a large amount of data which they feared could be misused.
As of now, you can access Google Books three ways
To View in-copyright and in-print books. (Which publishers are actively selling). Through Book Search, you may preview them and purchase them
In-copyright but out-of-print books : These aren’t free because they’re still under copyright, but the new agreement will give Google access to their digitized models which they can sell.
Out-of-copyright : Not mentioned, and is hence assumed free. These you may download.
The major misgivings which have been stated by the Open Book Alliance are as follows : The Open Book Alliance outlined its major concerns as :
The settlement still allows Google to purchase a monopoly on digital books.
Authors must still opt-out of the agreement even if they have not given their consent to be included in the deal.
Google’s claims regarding the Unclaimed Works Fiduciary are misleading and simply false.
Consumer privacy has NOT been protected or improved.
Academic libraries and independent researchers are still at the mercy of pricing from Google’s one stop book shop.
Instead of negotiating with stakeholders, Google cuts them out.
The 2 nd point is the most fishy. If an author doesn’t want his book to be included, he must choose to opt out, as opposed to Google asking authors their permission. Basically, if an author is silent, his consent is assumed as given, a concept which is extremely unfair.
A few days ago, a lot of critics filed their objections. And now, Indian authors have jumped into the fray .

Google has released versions of Google Voice for the iPhone and Palm webOS operating systems. It works on the iPhone running the 3.0 operating system . It also operates on Palm’s Pre and Pixi handsets, and provides a large chunk of the functionality of the native Voice apps for Android and BlackBerry to your phone’s browser.
Google Voice can insert itself as your default phone interface on Android and BlackBerry, and then accesses the contacts stored on your phone. On the iPhone, it remains a secondary interface and can’t sget access to your local contacts. (You can, however, use Google Sync to sync your phone’s contacts with your Google Account.)
The new mobile-specific Web site for Google Voice may be seen as app-like in certain ways. Being fast and using local storage, it is not required to load in your entire Google Voice inbox every time you launch it. You only need a mobile phone service and a Google Voice account to use the application. A dialer and a directory have been introduced for looking people up. And, finally, you no longer have to entertain Google Voice’s dial-around service (where, to make a connection, the Google Voice service dials both the person you are calling as well as your phone). Now it has come up with an ingenuous idea. Google Voice dials out from your phone, and displays your Voice account’s phone number as the caller’s ID the phone of the person you’re calling. Users can send and receive text messages using the mobile applications.
This new application provides Google the luxury to sidestep restrictions imposed by Apple. You may recall that Google had tried to promote Voice as a native iPhone app last year, but Apple had blocked it from all its stores. Their reason was that Google Voice app interfered with the iPhone’s built-in telephone components. Now it will be interesting to see how Apple would respond to this. What was once a buddy-buddy relationship between Cupertino and Mountain View, has now turned into somewhat sour. It started with Apple’s refusal to allow Google Voice app last year. Apple said that it was merely looking in to app’s compatibility with the iPhone. But that process, already into eighth month, seems to be never ending. The relationship hit its bottom when Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt quit from Apple’s board of directors, last August. Release of Android, ChromeOS and recently the Nexus One Smartphone, by Google, have further widened the rift. Apple seems to be pretty much annoyed by its former best mate and is even contemplating to sign up for Bing, Microsoft’s search engine.
However, the new Web-based Google Voice is impressive and its major advantage lies in the fact that it lets Web developers bring more application-like functionality to Web apps but it cannot be a substitute for a true native Google Voice for iPhone.

No doubt we all have become die hard users of Google services. Plenty of reasons for this. Some of which being free, good and reliable service, easy-to-use and clutter free interface, speed, cutting edge innovation and what not. As if all this was not enough, Google India now wants to help you with your website which again is yet another free service.
Named as the Google Site Clinic, any website that is submitted here will be analyzed by the Google Team and the website owner will get constructive advice on accessibility and improvements in return. All this advice if put to work, will definitely help you increase your website’s visibility in the Google Search results.
You may ask what’s the point in increasing the visibility in search results… my friends / clients know about my website and they will visit the same. Here, you are missing out on something: If you rank better in the Google Search results for a particular term then obviously people will tend to click the result that links to your website.
For eg. lets say you have a Gymnasium in an area called XYZ and a website for your Gym. Now if people search for Gym in XYZ and your website is the first result then they will click on the first result for sure. The outcome: you have some more (new) business without any advertisement at all! Had it been the case that your website doesn’t appear in the first results page at all… then you lose out on that potential extra business!
How to submit your website to the Google Site Clinic?
All you need to do is just fill in all the information on the form here . Some basic requirements for this are that your website should be already registered on the Google Webmaster Tools (which is again a free service). Submissions will be accepted till the 20th of Jan, 2010. So hurry, submit your website now.
What will be the selection criteria?
Due to the sheer number of submissions that are going to happen, all the websites won’t obviously be reviewed by Google. One important criteria your website should meet is the quality guidelines .
Google will also feature a few websites that make to the Analysis team on their official blog .

Google ’s Local Business Center has been renamed “ Google Places .” The re-branding effort is accompanied by a handful of new features designed to help local business owners gain an edge in search engine marketing. The name change was made to better tie the business owner dashboard with Place Pages , the Yelp -like local business landing pages that Google launched about six months ago. Just as before, owners can fill out basic details about their business, share special offers and other info through tweet-like updates, and track exactly how people are finding their business using Google’s search engine. The new features are a diverse bunch. If your business delivers goods, you can now specify your geographic delivery range to potential customers. Since people like pretty pictures, you can also request that Google come and take photos of your store, restaurant, studio, etc. for free. This could be the feature that rumormongers dubbed “ Google Store Views ” in February; if so, it doesn’t let customers virtually browse the store like originally imagined. Google has also added a new advertising program called Tags . For $25 per month you can make your business stand out in Google Maps searches with a little yellow tag. Users who investigate the tag will see customized deals that you’ve opted to provide for them. Finally, Google is now offering custom versions of those QR codes it started testing out a few months ago. You can request a QR code using the dashboard, or you can wait and see if Google sends you one on its own. A new round of the “Favorite Places” has been initiated, so 50,000 businesses will soon get window stickers with QR codes in the mail. For more business coverage, follow Mashable Business on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook Reviews: Facebook , Google , Google Maps , Twitter , Yelp Tags: Google , google local business center , google places , location services , Search , search engine , yelp ...

Google seems to be obsessed with twitter. There’s a saying ‘if you can’t beat them then buy them and if you can’t buy them then join them’. Google seems to be doing something similar when it comes to twitter. Google in matter of days has launched two products that actually enhance and give insights into how one can engage better on twitter.
One of them is a new feature which will help users search and explore the public archive of tweets that are tweeted on the twitter platform.
Check screenshot below:
Google had launched realtime search and then later integrated updates from sites like facebook, myspace and google buzz besides for twitter.
The other feature or more like a small product they have launched is Google Follow Finder which is a twitter suggestion tool and a similarity tool.
Check screenshot below:
All in all the above two features are in line with Google’s mission of organizing the worlds information and making its searchable but still it also shows how Buzz isn’t buzzing yet as well as how twitter is the ‘in’ thing the world over when it comes to conversations.

In October last year Google’s Marissa Mayer announced that Social Search graduated from Google Labs. Until last week, however, it was an opt in feature. But now anyone who searches on www.google.com (US) will be able to see Social Search results.
For the uninformed, Social Search means that any person searching the web will also be able to see results from friends/connections on their network. Amidst privacy concerns, Google was quick to point out that it only displays information that is already publicly available.
If you were to search for ‘India’ you would see a new section in your search results from your social circle.
There are also links to see your Social Circle(the contacts whose social data will appear in your results) and Social Content(the social data that you are sharing with others).
In order to see Social Results, apart from searching on the Google US page, it also necessary that you are signed into your Google Account. If you still don’t any Social Results it is probably because you have no Social Data available to you from your Contacts.
Contacts can include people on your GTalk chat list, Friends family and coworkers on Google Contacts, contacts from sites like Twitter and Friendfeed – provided these have been added to your Google Profile. To see your Social Contacts go here .
Content you see may typically include Websites and Blogs linked via your friends, Status updates, Images from your social circle, subscriptions from your Google Reader.
For a better understanding of Social Search check video below:
Richness of the content that Social Search throws up depends entirely on what your network is like. Given the codependent nature of people, a push in the right direction from Google will ensure this feature will go a long way in improving the search experience they provide.

A Ping List for Your Blog
I've been searching off and on for the last several years for a comprehensive list of tested & verified ping services. If you've ever gone looking, you'll know what I'm talking about when I tell you that most of the available lists of ping services are hopelessly outdated or inaccurate.
<!--break-->
The tool I used to verify the validity of each ping service is a wordpress plugin from MaxBlogPress called (coincidentally) the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer . It is a free plugin, but I still was a little reluctant to try it because you've got to register, using your email address. But, I went ahead...(you DO have a second email account used for registration requirements don't you?)...and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised at the functionality & neatness of this plugin. To borrow a phrase..."it just works."
The log file output of the Ping Optimizer plugin tells you both the status of your ping for each post, AND whether the individual ping service uses weblogUpdates.Ping or weblogUpdates.extendedPing. If you don't know what that means, don't worry, it's not of critical importance. The short explanation is that the 'extendedPing' sends a little more information about your blog post.
If you use Wordpress, all you've got to do is drop the Ping Service URL shown below into your Settings > Writing page in the 'Update Services' block at the bottom. OR, if you choose to download the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer, put it in Settings > MBP Ping Optimizer page 'URI's to Ping' block.
I include the 'Type of Ping' column for those users like me who use Drupal . I use the Multiping Module , by Stephan . You'll need to enter the ping service URL & ping type manually in the Multiping Module; located in yoursite.com/admin/settings/multiping.
Another helpful little feature the Ping Optimizer brings is automatic syncronization with the Settings > Writing 'Update Services' list. One of the primary benefits of the Ping Optimizer is that it does NOT ping your blog when you merely make updates & changes.
If you'd rather download than copy-n-paste, I've attached the list as an Excel spreadsheet (below the on-page list).

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum , where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Google Apps for business has a number of benefits over traditional business IT and desktop software. Using the full suite essentially places all of your data and entire workflow in the cloud, meaning you can access it all anywhere, any time, from any Internet connection. At $50 per year per user, the fully integrated apps system is certainly cost-effective, and even adding the free versions of Gmail , Calendar , and Google Docs into your workflow can keep your employees coordinated. For more casual users, or even those who might not be acquainted with Google Apps, here’s a guide to how the software can benefit your small business. Gmail The many advanced features of Gmail really make it a leap forward in the web-based e-mail space, and a lot of these are ideal for business. If you’re not ready to take the full plunge into the paid Google Apps suite, you can still configure Gmail to function as your business e-mail client through your existing domain name by following the steps outlined in my post, “ How to Set Up Gmail as Your Business E-mail Client .” The first big advantage of Gmail, like all the apps discussed here, is that it functions in the cloud. You don’t have to worry about downloading messages to multiple locations or syncing various devices. Your inbox will look the same from any web or mobile connection. And with 25 gigs of e-mail storage per user (with a paid apps account), it’s unlikely you’ll ever have to clean your inbox or delete old messages. Gmail works a bit differently than traditional desktop clients and webmail services in that conversations are “threaded.” This means that e-mails with the same or related subject lines are grouped together in a thread so you can see all the messages sent and received on a topic in one place. When a new message is received, the entire thread is bumped to the top of your inbox, making tracking complex and multi-party conversations easy. Gmail also has a chat feature built right into the interface that lets you send a quick update or discuss a project with an employee if you’re not in the same office. Chats are also stored in Gmail so that you can search and refer to them later. Google search, the asset that started it all for the company, is of course built right into Gmail, which makes finding information from e-mail conversations (even very old ones) extremely efficient. Additionally, Gmail Labs offers some extra settings for your inbox that can be extremely valuable for business use: Signature Tweaks puts your e-mail signature before the quoted text in a reply the way that Outlook would. Default ‘Reply to All’ allows you to reply to group e-mails with one click, instead of from a drop-down menu. Forgotten ...

Google has just rolled out the first version of the Google Wave extensions gallery , making it easier for users to take advantage of some of the cool add-ons developers are building into the service.
