[In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu ] Technical debates are discussed endlessly within the blog-o-sphere/twitter-verse, and they range across every developer community. Each language, framework, tool, and platform inevitably has at least a few going on at any particular point in time. Below are a few observations I?ve made over the years about technical debates in general, as well as some comments about some of the recent discussions I?ve seen recently about the topic of ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC in particular. General Observations About Technical Debates Below are a few general observations independent of any specific technical debate: a) Developers love to passionately debate and compare languages, frameworks, APIs, and tools. This is true in every programming community (.NET, Java, PHP, C++, Ruby, Python, etc). I think you can view these types of religious technical debates in two ways: They are sometimes annoying and often a waste of time. They are often a sign of a healthy and active community (since passion means people care deeply on both sides of a debate, and is far better than apathy). Personally I think both points are true. b) There is never only ?one right way? to develop something. As an opening interview question I sometimes ask people to sort an array of numbers in the most efficient way they can. Most people don?t do well with it. This is usually not because they don?t know sort algorithms, but rather because they never think to ask the scenarios and requirements behind it ? which is critical to understanding the most efficient way to do it. How big is the sequence of numbers? How random is the typical number sequence (is it sometimes already mostly sorted, how big is the spread of numbers, are the numbers all unique, do duplicates cluster together)? How parallel is the computer architecture? Can you allocate memory as part of the sort or must it be constant? Etc. These are important questions to ask because the most efficient and optimal way to sort an array of numbers depends on understanding the answers. Whenever people assert that there is only ?one right way? to a programming problem they are almost always assuming a fixed set of requirements/scenarios/inputs ? which is rarely optimal for every scenario or every developer. And to state the obvious - most problems in programming are far more complex than sorting an array of numbers. c) Great developers using bad tools/frameworks can make great apps. Bad developers using great tools/frameworks can make bad apps. Be very careful about making broad assumptions (good or bad) about the quality of the app you are building based on the tools/frameworks used. d) Developers (good and bad) can grow stronger by stretching themselves and lear ...

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 has officially shipped! If you haven’t already, download a copy from here . What New with Visual Studio If you are new to Visual Studio 2010 please check out all our previous blogs to get a understanding of all the changes we made for Beta 1 including this intro blog on beta 1: http://blogs.msdn.com/webdevtools/archive/2009/05/20/visual-studio-10-and-asp-net-4-0-beta1.aspx What’s New with Beta 2 With this release the Web Tools team has introduced a number of great improvements. A number of these improvements are listed below. New Template Using the default ASP.NET web site template, projects now come with a pre-configured site. This template configures your site to use master and content pages. In addition, it has styles pre-defined and controls for login, register and changing your password. If you do not want to use this template but would rather start from a empty state you can still use the “Empty Web Site” template. This creates a completely empty project that you will need to add a default web form to. Silverlight 3 Tooling Support IMPORTANT NOTE: If you already have Silverlight 3 SDK RTM version (not the GDR) installed on your box you will need to first uninstall it before running Visual Studio 2010 beta 2 setup. This is irrespective of the SDK language version and platform. The SDK GDR does not install on top of the RTM version of the SDK. This problem should be remedied by RTM. If you proceed with install in this state you will get an error at the end of install stating that the SDK failed to install. This error does not affect your setup of beta 2 for Visual Studio but you will still need uninstall to SDK RTM and re-install the SDK GDR if you wish to get the latest version of the SDK. Note that you can install the SL3 GDR SDK directly from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1ea49236-0de7-41b1-81c8-a126ff39975b . While Dev10 tooling for Beta 1 has Silverlight 2 features that worked with Silverlight 3, Beta 2 now re-introduces all the Silverlight 3 features directly into Visual Studio. Changes include: Support for configuring Out of browser (see screenshot below). Support for Transparent Platform Extensions. Page.xaml renamed to MainPage.xaml. Removal of support for Silverlight 2. Parameterization of Web Packages VS will automatically parameterize the connection strings defined in the web.config and the destination virtual application name. The users can specify customized parameters in parameters.xml file in the project directory as well, to parameterize configurations, such as WCF service’s end point etc. Import from web.config file for DB deployment ...

Enables you to build Model View Controller (MVC) applications by using the ASP.NET framework.
ASP.NET MVC is an alternative, not a replacement, for ASP.NET Web Forms that offers the following benefits and features:
- Separation of concerns and application tasks (input logic, business logic, and UI logic)
- Testability (support for Test-Driven Development)
- Fine-grained control over HTML and JavaScript
- Intuitive URLs through a URL-mapping component

One of my roles in the Web Platform & Tools team is managing our ASP.NET websites, including www.asp.net , beta.asp.net (running ASP.NET 2.0 since April!) and the ASP.NET Forums.
We’re about 15 minutes away from going live with our new Atlas.asp.net preview website which will show the world what we’ve been doing with Atlas since Scott blogged it in June. Since then, the developers have been working at an amazing pace to get the preview together and ready for the PDC and I think we’re going to surprise people with what we have to date.
The site will include all of the Atlas content for PDC, including H ands-on labs, live quickstarts demoing Atlas features, documentation, and VSIs for creating your own Atlas apps with Visual Studio 2005! In the coming days, we’ll have even more – an Atlas Wiki, that demonstrates many of the great features we’ve built in. There are also three new Atlas forums for questions, feedback and bug reports. This is a technology preview - not even a beta, so we're relying on your feedback to help us improve Atlas even more in the coming months.
Everything goes live at 8:00am PDT. Check it out and let us know what you think! ...

Q&A with: Thomas J. Steenburgh Published: August 16, 2010 Author: Sarah Jane Gilbert
Harvard Business Publishing has released new toolkits to help managers make key marketing decisions on market analysis, breakeven analysis, customer lifetime value, profit and pricing, and analyzing the competitive environment.
The five toolkits were developed by marketing professors Thomas Steenburgh of HBS and Jill Avery (HBS DBA'07) of Simmons School of Management. We asked Steenburgh to explain how practitioners can use the toolkits in their businesses.
Sarah Jane Gilbert: Can you describe the marketing analysis toolkits? What led you to develop the toolkits?
Tom Steenburgh: The field of marketing has undergone immense changes over the past decade, and those changes are driving an increasing need for data analysis.
Marketing today combines both art and science: Managers must combine creative thinking with rigorous analysis when making decisions. Increasing financial pressures demand that managers deliver ROI from their marketing investments; therefore, quantifying the effects of marketing decisions is imperative. At the same time, customer relationship management (CRM) software and emerging Web 2.0 applications are providing managers with reams of data about their customers.
The marketing analysis toolkits are a suite of analytical tools that managers can use to inform decision-making in marketing. Each toolkit includes a technical note that outlines the analysis technique, provides examples of how it is used in marketing, and shows mathematical formulas used in the technique. Also included in each toolkit is a spreadsheet supplement that contains sample problems; interactive graphs and tables that illuminate the concept visually; and a prebuilt Excel model that guides users in conducting quantitative analysis.
The toolkits are designed to be self-study tools that students can complete on their own outside the classroom or that managers can use on the job. They are particularly useful for managers who lack a strong math foundation and/or who have not had experience with quantitative modeling.
Q: How are they incorporated into the curriculum? Can they be used outside the classroom?
A: The marketing analysis toolkits were designed to provide a quantitative foundation for analyzing marketing decisions and an analytical structure and process for completing a marketing plan project. They can be used in undergraduate and MBA courses to enhance students' comprehension and usage of quantitative concepts in marketing.
Professors have used the toolkits to introduce analytical concepts that appear in HBS cases and to provide supplemental support for students as they run quantitative analyses to support their case preparation. For example, the "Customer Lifetime Value Analysis" toolkit complements the "HubSpot: Inbound Marketing and Web 2.0" case, which introduces the concept of calc ...

Sony's got a £2m marketing campaign lined up for the UK , but it's admitted rival Microsoft will always have greater spending power in the console wars.
Mixtur will support corporate and product positioning and messaging, branding, PR, social media, collateral development, go-to-market planning and execution, and lead generation programs for Realcom U.S. and the AskMe product.
There's no question that mobile is getting bigger, and is becoming an increasingly important channel for businesses to reach customers.
We had a conversation with Tim Nguyen, a sales manager for mobile marketing firm Trumpia , which has worked with plenty of small and large businesses in assisting them with utilizing mobile marketing to drive traffic and revenue.
"One of the most unique mobile marketing campaigns we have been a part of [is] definitely our recent work with Sony Pictures' new movie, Takers," says Nguyen. "This was unique in that we were not only working with one of the biggest companies in America, but we also had T.I., a very influential cast member and musician heavily promoting the campaign."
As the company said in a blog post about it, Takers had thousands of people text in their mobile keyword in les than a week, to enter a giveaway for tickets to a private screening of the film. Trumpia called this "a testament to how quickly and effective mobile keywords can be when marketed correctly."
The campaign manager called it a huge success, saying, "After a quick export and some segmentation we were able to see where people were visiting New Orleans from. Using users area code we were able to see what state they originated from, giving us a much deeper analytic view for our client."
That is certainly an added benefit to this kind of mobile marketing.
"Mobile Marketing much like any type of marketing will be ineffective if you are not providing substance or something of interest to your targeted market," Nguyen tells us. "Therefore, really to be effective you have to be cautious with what you're texting to individuals and make sure the message is relevant and carefully thought out."
We asked him about the differences in effective strategies between small businesses and large ones. After all, small businesses don't always have the resources the big boys do.
"Really no difference between the two because large or small they are trying to accomplish the same thing which is to bring in more revenue," says Nguyen. "This can easily be done assuming your marketing campaign is strong enough that it drives individuals to act upon your offer."
As far as advice for the small business with a tight budget, Nguyen says, "Don't hesitate to go mobile! Often times mobile marketing will be much cheaper than print ads, paid advertisements, mailers, etc, so one you will be saving money by going mobile."
"Two, text messages are delivered in real time and go directly to cell phones, which almost everyone in the United States has," he adds. "Therefore text messages will be read immediately and delivered straight to the source to increase conversion and the effectiveness of your ...
