There is an interesting discussion going on in our WebProWorld forum about search engine optimization post Microsoft-Yahoo deal. For those unfamiliar with the topic, Microsoft and Yahoo recently gained regulatory approval on a search and advertising deal announced last year, which will see Yahoo using Bing's algorithm in its search results. The discussion is about whether or not this means businesses and webmasters will only have to worry about optimizing for 2 search engines (Google/Bing) rather than 3 (Google, Yahoo, and Bing).
Will you focus your efforts more heavily on Bing? Discuss .
What Bing Coming to Yahoo Means
It's important to note that Microsoft and Yahoo still have plenty of details to work out before anyone knows just how the product of this deal will function. We know that Bing will be used in the back-end of searches on Yahoo, but we don't know what other elements Yahoo will still be incorporating into the search experience. For example, Yahoo said last week that the companies will still be discussing how SearchMonkey and BOSS figure into the mix.
Optimizing for Yahoo is not going to be limited to showing up in Bing's results. That's not to say that showing up in Bing's results won't have its advantages for Yahoo search, but there is a lot more going on at Yahoo than that. The company has been stressing that it is still very much focused on search , and under the deal with Microsoft, Yahoo will still be controlling the user experience at Yahoo.com.
Right now, Yahoo.com has plenty of elements to consider, from news and trending topics, to a whole slew of "applications" that users can customize on their Yahoo homepage. Among these are Facebook and Flickr. If you want to get in front of Yahoo users, it's not limited to Yahoo search results. That said, Yahoo search results also have their own thing going on. Keep an eye on the box that appears under the search box after you enter a query. It contains related queries, and "related concepts". This is one area that could conceivably be independent from Bing (although that remains to be seen at this point). Yahoo is not shy about putting brands in these "related concepts" either. You can find WebProNews in there for a query like "ebusiness news".
The point is, Yahoo has made it clear that it will continue to control the user experience, and that means there should be plenty of areas within Yahoo that are out of Bing's control. This leads me to presume that Yahoo will not be something you'll want to ignore, just because Bing is integrated into it. Remember that at this point, Yahoo controls a much greater percentage of the search market than Bing.
All of that said, you may want to pay closer attention to your Bing rankings if you haven't done so in the past, because while Yahoo will still be Yahoo to its users, the deal also means there will be significantly more eyeballs on what Bing determin ...
While Google V/S China is the big fight that has the entire internet world riveted, there is an interesting side story that could be developing.
Yahoo and AliBaba on the rocks?
Following cyberattacks aimed at accessing accounts of Chinese Human Rights Activists, Google announced on its blog that it would stop filtering its search results in China. Keeping the big picture in mind and perhaps in the hopes of winning some good will in the West, Yahoo stated that it was ‘aligned’ with Google. It went on to echo the sentiment that the attacks were ‘deeply disturbing’.
These words, however were not received too kindly by AliBaba, Yahoo’s partner in China. The AliBaba Group, which holds a majority in Yahoo China, issued a statement saying “Yahoo’s statement that it is ‘aligned’ with the position Google took last week was reckless, given the lack of facts in evidence”. Perhaps they assumed that Yahoo also endorsed the insinuation that the Chinese Government may be involved. Yahoo, though, clarified that their statement was targeted at the cyber attacks. Since then both companies have been silent on the issue.
Some have implied that Google’s decision to pull out from China may also have a fair bit to do with economics given that it has roughly 30% of the search market share in China. Between filtering results for China, facing heavy criticism back home and fighting an uphill battle to gain market share, American companies have always had to face a difficult time in China. A situation that Yahoo had recognized as early as 2005. This resulted in a deal that saw Yahoo handover all its Internet operations in the country to AliBaba in exchange for a 40% stake in the company.
Relations between the two companies have been on the decline as Yahoo China’s search market revenue has steadily declined from 21% in 2005 to less than 1% in the final quarter of 2009. Yahoo CEO, Carol Bartz even expressed her disappointment at the way the Yahoo brand was handled by AliBaba.
While this ‘side story’ is unlikely to spiral out of control and have an immediate effect on the partnership, it could certainly affect their long term relationship!
Yahoo was attacked too!
In it’s reaction to the Data Theft in China Google had mentioned that 20 other companies were targets of these cyber attacks too. One of these companies was Yahoo! A source, demanding his/her identity to be kept secret, revealed that Yahoo was aware of these attacks even before Google approached them to discuss the matter. Unlike Google, however, Yahoo has decided to maintain its silence on the issue.
It is unclear what the nature of the attack on Yahoo was. Some suspect that the yahoo mail servers were a target. No luck confirming anything from Yahoo though. They just released a statement saying – ‘Yahoo does not generally disclose that type of information, but we take security very seriously and we take appropriate action in the event o ...
Yahoo’s social media strategy of lots and lots of Facebook is coming to fruition in a big way today, with the web portal rolling out deeper integration of Facebook within Yahoo Mail. Last month, Yahoo started with its first Yahoo Mail/Facebook integration: importing Facebook friends’ e-mail addresses into their Yahoo contacts. Today’s two new features make Yahoo Mail a lot more social, though. The first feature is simple but effective: the ability to update your Facebook status via Yahoo Mail. Once you log in with your Facebook account, you can simply choose to share your status updates via Facebook, in addition to your Yahoo network — it’s a straightforward status update box that appears in your inbox. The second feature is also cool: now whenever someone emails you that is also your Facebook friend, their profile picture will appear in the email. As we highlighted in Google vs. Yahoo: Who Has the Right Social Strategy , Yahoo’s goals seem to be centered around partnerships and becoming a portal to the social media world. If Yahoo keeps adding features like these to its various other properties, it has the potential to become a social hub. Does Facebook integration make Yahoo Mail more enticing? Indian Institutes have always had great students and professors and the IIT’s and IIM’s of this country have made a name for themselves in the world. But if there is one thing that Indian institutes have lacked is the research that is carried out in the western institutes like Stanford and Harvard especially in the technology field.
To plug this area of concern and to initiate innovation within Indian campuses Yahoo India research and development has tied up with Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) to provide a cluster of servers running Yahoo’s open source Hadoop software, and web data for research to the students.
Such initiatives are important for innovation at the grass root level. It was this very infrastructure that was provided at stanford that lead to the creation of the google’s of this world. I believe more such initiatives should be taken at IIT’s and BITS and other such institutes across India for more innovation to come through in the arena of tech apps.

Yahoo said early Wednesday it has entered into a partnership with Twitter that will integrate real-time tweets across the Yahoo network.
Users will be able to access their personal Twitter feeds on the Yahoo homepage, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Sports, and other areas. Yahoo users will also be able to update their Twitter status from Yahoo and share content in their Twitter feed.
"The information in one single tweet can travel light-years farther with this Yahoo! integration," said Twitter cofounder, Biz Stone. "Tweets in more places brings relevance where and when you need it most."
While Twitter seemingly wants to be everywhere on the Web as it has search deals with Microsoft's Bing and Google, Yahoo is trying to dive deeper into the social realm and become the go-to property for all things social.
Yahoo reached a similar deal with Facebook in December that is expected to roll out in the first half of this year. Users will be able to connect with Facebook friends on Yahoo, view a feed of their friends' activity, and share content such as photos from Flickr or comment on news stories.
The move by Yahoo is also part of its Open Strategy which Jim Stoneham, vice president of Communities for Yahoo said is "aimed at making experiences dramatically more open and personally relevant for the more than 600 million people that visit Yahoo each month."
"Let me try to capture the enormity of this integration in 140 characters or less: We're turning the key to the online social universe - you will find the most personally relevant experiences through Yahoo!," said Bryan Lamkin, senior vice president, consumer products group, Yahoo!.
"We're also simplifying people's lives by bringing their social worlds - and the world -- together for easy access."
Who do you think will see the most benefit from this partnership? Yahoo or Twitter?

In search, a lot of what Yahoo has done has been overshadowed by what Google and Bing have done, simply because Google controls such a huge piece of the search pie, and Bing is still a relatively fresh entity. All eyes are still on Bing as it grows. That leaves Yahoo somewhere in the middle, where it technically sits in terms of market share.
How important is Yahoo to your search strategy? Let us know .
Yahoo has done quite a bit over the past six months, and has a lot more going on in the coming ones. Regardless of whether or not Yahoo's deal with Microsoft finally goes through, and Bing takes over the algorithm side of things, Yahoo is still very much focused on search.
"Yahoo has been in search, is in search, and will continue to be in the future," says Yahoo's new senior VP of search products, Shashi Seth. "We'll continue to drive innovation. It's our stake in the ground."
According to the latest data from Experian Hitwise , Yahoo's market share in the U.S. declined by 2 percentage points from December to January as Bing and even Ask grew by 5% and 4% respectively. Regardless of this data, there are still plenty of people using Yahoo, and that means businesses shouldn't ignore it. In fact, businesses should do all they can to understand the audience they are reaching with each individual search engine.
An interesting study from Wunderman, ZAAZ, and Compete suggests that the demographic and psychographic profile of each loyal search engine user is different. Bing users, for example, tend to be mostly from the tip of the adoption curve (innovators and early adopters) where Yahoo and Google's passengers tend to be middle majority, according to the report from these firms.
The point is that it is easy to get wrapped up in specific search engines, but Yahoo is still a key player and it is worth paying attention to all of the things they are doing to improve their own users' experience, because you might find specific ways to reach Yahoo users that might be slightly different than ways you might try to reach Google users (or Bing's users).
What Yahoo Has Done Lately
In September, Yahoo launched a completely new version of Yahoo Search. In addition to being faster, this new version included things like:
- SearchMonkdey structured data, which lends to richer results from an increasing number of sites
- Search Scan and Safe Search, which help protect users from viruses, spyware and spam
- Search Pad, which lets users take notes for research as they search
- Query assistance, which has been extended in the left-hand column to let users browse concepts related to their queries
- Image and video search refiners
Yahoo has expanded its coverage for enhanced results to formats like video , documents , games , products , local businesses , events , discussions , and news . In November, Yahoo extended its Search Assist features from the web se ...
U.S economy is predicted to perform on a dicey ground for quite some time but the employment activity surely seems to be on uptrend worldwide. In a seconded move Monster Worldwide Inc has decided to acquire Yahoo HotJobs for $225 Million in cash making itself a formidable player in Online recruitment space just behind Careerbuilder in US.
Yahoo since a long time has been looking at trimming down various non-allied businesses in order to cut costs and renew its focus on online consumer offerings. Its job property – Yahoo HotJobs which it acquired for $445 Million way back in 2002 was showing healthy growth rate of 23 % so can be deemed a good match for Monster to seize the growth of Careerbuilder, its largest US based competitor.
Monster worldwide will also enter into a multi-year agreement with Yahoo on completion of this acquisition. The agreement will allow monster to become Yahoo’s provider of career and job content on the Yahoo’s homepage in the United States and Canada.Yahoo stands to gain yearly payment of around $20 Million to $31 Million based on performance and clicks metrics. The valuations for this acquisition is around 2X revenues similar to what Monster Worldwide trades in US markets.
Monster reported decline of 27% in revenues at $213 million in Dec- Quarter compared with $293 million,in a year ago period.Monster Worldwide in the meantime has generated 42% of its revenue outside the United States.
Will it Trigger M & A Activity in India’s Online Recruitment Space?
The success in India’s Online recruitment space requires large Economies of Scale in order to attract bouts of recruiters and job applicants. Recruitment Portals like Naukri from Info edge already has such scale and are even concentrated on Niche segments by way of Firstnaukri .
The other prominent players in this space includes Timesjobs (Times Business Solutions), Clickjobs ( Consim Info through Perspi Interactive) and Shine (HT media through Firefly e-Ventures Ltd.). They all seem less interested in M & A as attaining economies of scale is their first priority and acquiring niche property might not auger well for integration synergies.
So we expect a narrow consolidation in domestic space but do expect big announcements from Global recruitment players operating out of Asia & India as even region specific deals will become a reality in future looking at surging economic activity and hiring momentum.

Debadutta Upadhyaya who is the National Sales Head at Yahoo! India Ltd is said to have put in her papers at the company. According to our sources Debadutta Upadhyaya is set to join Vdopia as Country Manager for India. Vdopia was recently in their news when they launched technology for dynamic ad insertion in live video streaming .
Given Debadutta’s past experience in Sales we expect her to drive the same at Vdopia. We contacted Vdopia PR and they said they couldn’t confirm the news at this moment but would soon come out with an official story.
Debadutta spent almost 6 years in Yahoo and grew from her role as Account Manager in 2004 to National Sales Head in 2008. Prior to Yahoo she had spent 8 years in the Times group.
Yahoo had last year had one other top level exit in Sharad Sharma who was the R&D CEO at Yahoo who later joined Canaan Partners as entrepreneur in residence. Its interesting to see startups taking high profile exec’s away from established internet companies like Yahoo. Its also a sign that the employees are also willing to take a risk and join new startups. Good sign for the internet industry I say!

Now that Yahoo and Microsoft have received DoJ and EU approval on their search and advertising deal, Yahoo is doing plenty of talking about what the deal will mean for its search engine and its advertisers.
The two companies have a Search Alliance page set up that gives some insight about what to expect, such as:
When the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance is implemented, both companies will continue to have differentiated consumer search experiences. However, Microsoft will manage the technology platforms that deliver the algorithmic (powered by Bing) and paid (powered by adCenter) search results.
Yahoo! and Microsoft will each provide customer support to different advertiser segments: Yahoo!’s sales team will exclusively support high volume advertisers, SEO and SEM agencies, and resellers and their clients. Microsoft will support self-service advertisers. In addition, Microsoft adCenter will be the platform for all search campaigns.
For advertisers, Yahoo says they will be able to reach more customers, save time and effort, and benefit from "rapid innovation." According to Yahoo, the "alliance" will help advertisers reach up to 150 million searchers and get about 62% more search volume.
There have been many questions about what would happen to Yahoo Search BOSS and SearchMonkey after the Microsoft-Yahoo deal took effect. There are still questions, but Yahoo has at least addressed the situation again now that the deal has received approval.
"With the implementation of the search alliance, the BOSS team is excited to examine the Microsoft web, image, and video search technologies in more detail," says Yahoo's Ashim Chhabra. "Yahoo! may continue to offer the BOSS service, which would integrate some Yahoo! services and content with algorithmic results provided by Microsoft. The team is exploring what a future offering could consist of, with some services powered by Microsoft and unique content provided by Yahoo!. As we finalize details for any changes to the BOSS service, we will give developers plenty of notice."
"Also, prior to the announcement of the Yahoo! and Microsoft search alliance, we shared our intention to explore a fee-based structure for BOSS," Chhabra adds. "We continue to explore an appropriate revenue model as we work to define the future of BOSS in the context of our new search alliance. We know BOSS is important to your business, and any conclusions on strategic direction and roadmap for the service will be shared with developers as soon as possible."
Yahoo and Microsoft are also sharing ideas about how to "advance" SearchMonkey. The fact that they say "advance" seems to indicate that it will still have a place in Yahoo's search strategy.
...
Back when the Microsoft and Yahoo search and advertising deal was announced, people (particularly developers) were left wondering what would become of such Yahoo projects as Searchmonkey and BOSS . These things let developers build upon Yahoo's search technology.
Microsoft did imply it would be open to keeping them around, but not much has been revealed about the plans. While this isn't exactly clarity, Yahoo has addressed the future of BOSS to a mild extent. In a post on Yahoo Groups, Ashim Chhabra of the Yahoo Search BOSS Team writes :
Under this agreement, Yahoo! is permitted to continue offering the BOSS web service, with search results that would integrate Yahoo! services and content with algorithmic results provided by Microsoft. As always, our intention is to provide a BOSS offering as long as it makes business and economic sense to do so. We are still examining what the BOSS offering will consist of, with some services powered by Microsoft, unique content that Yahoo! currently provides, and the potential for additional Yahoo! content in the future.
Prior to the announcement of the Yahoo!-Microsoft search agreement, we'd already shared our intention to explore a fee-based structure for BOSS. We continue to explore an appropriate fee structure or other revenue model as we work through the future of BOSS.
Yahoo has said that it will uphold the front-end part of its search engine, but the back-end would generally be handled by Microsoft's Bing search engine. Last year, Microsoft acknowledged that it liked what Yahoo was doing with Searchmonkey and BOSS, so it is quite possible these things will remain.
The Microsoft Yahoo deal is not necessarily going to be a permanent relationship anyway. That is if it even gets approved. The deal still faces regulatory approval.

Yahoo has made some improvements to its Finance Search interface. Yahoo Finance Search is now including results from the web, and can uncover details on companies and executives, find info on private companies, and help determine what companies are associated with topics, Yahoo says.
Every page of Yahoo Finance has a link that says "Finance Search". Users can simply click this to search or browse a list of the day's popular finance searches.
When a user's search exactly matches a ticker or quote name, the user will see pricing information and a chart. They will also get news stories from Yahoo and the web. Another section provides a list of companies (pubic and private), ETFs, Mutual Funds, and Indices (from US and worldwide exchanges) generated from matches between the user's search and content on Yahoo Finance, including company/quote name, ticker, business summary, key execs, analysts, and insiders.
"As an example, you can enter the name of a person (' Carol Bartz ') or a topic (' biodynamic farm ') to find related companies," explains Yahoo. "In the example of Carol Bartz, she is a key exec and insider at the companies listed. In the example of 'biodynamic farm,' biodynamic farm is mentioned in the business summary on the company profile pages."
When a user uses web search results, they will find content from Yahoo Finance and the web. In the default "all results" view, the top three results come from Yahoo Finance and the ones after that are from the web. However, users can choose the option to view only results from Yahoo Finance or only the web.

Yahoo has begun rolling out what the company calls its "next milestone" in Facebook integration. Yahoo Mail users can now update their Facebook status right from their inbox, and they can see their friends' Facebook profile photos in emails received in Yahoo Mail.
"These features come on the heels of other recent Yahoo! social updates, including the Yahoo! Contacts – Facebook friends import feature that launched in early March and Yahoo!’s recent support of @anywhere, and there will be more to come in the weeks and months ahead," a representative for Yahoo tells WebProNews.
"Now, whether you want to send an email, SMS, IM, or update your Yahoo! or Facebook status, you can do it all from your Yahoo! Mail inbox," the rep says.
To activate the new features, users can simply link their Yahoo and Facebook accounts by clicking on the "add to Facebook" link in the status section of the What's New page in Yahoo Mail.
Yahoo says the Facebook integration is "just the start" of how the company plans to make it easier to do more from within Yahoo mail.

The Microsoft-Yahoo deal , which will ultimately see Bing’s search technology power Yahoo’s search results, has been approved by regulators. According to a statement put out by the two companies this morning, both U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission have given the green light to the alliance. First announced in July of last year (but not finalized until December ), the companies will now proceed with implementation. The companies say that process “is expected to begin in the coming days and will involve transitioning Yahoo!’s algorithmic and paid search platforms to Microsoft, with Yahoo! becoming the exclusive relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers globally.” Yahoo and Microsoft aim to have search integration completed in the U.S. by the end of this year, though transitioning advertisers “may wait until 2011 if they determine that the transition will be more effective after the holiday season.” Globally, the companies expect to have the whole move completed by 2012. In conjunction with the announcement, Microsoft and Yahoo have launched searchalliance.com , though the site appears to be down as of 11:10 ET. Tags: microsoft , Search , Yahoo ...

Steven Stamkos (notes) got high praise from an NHL great. Stamkos extended his franchise-record points streak to 16 games, and Antero Niittymaki (notes) remained perfect against Atlanta, helping the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Thrashers 6-2 on Saturday night. Tampa Bay coach Rick Tocchet said former teammate and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux used “Wow1” after the game to describe the 20-year-old Stamkos. “He’s a special guy,” Tocchet said about Stamkos. “The guy thrives with ice time.” Stamkos had two goals—which gave him 40 for the season—and an assist. The center has 15 goals and 14 assists during his streak. Niittymaki improved to 17-0-0 overall against Atlanta. Martin St. Louis (notes) , Paul Szczechura (notes) , Teddy Purcell (notes) —on a penalty shot—and Vincent Lecavalier (notes) also scored for the Lightning, who stopped a five-game losing streak. “I thought it was a great team effort,” Stamkos said. “It was one of those games where if you lose it, you don’t want to say that’s the season, but it’s pretty devastating to lose to a team like that that’s ahead of you.” The Lightning would have fallen five points behind Atlanta, which started the day eighth in the Eastern Conference, with a loss Saturday. St. Louis was shaken up after being checked into the boards by Atlanta’s Clarke MacArthur (notes) with 7:46 left in the game. After spending a couple minutes kneeling behind the Thrashers’ net, St. Louis was able to skate off the ice. “I think he’s going to be OK,” Tocchet said. “It was a scary moment there.” New Tampa Bay owner Jeff Vinik attended his first home game since getting NHL approval to purchase the team Wednesday. Niclas Bergfors (notes) and Colby Armstrong (notes) scored for Atlanta. The Thrashers are 4-1-2 in their last seven games. “I think they were a little sharper, wanted it a little more,” Atlanta coach John Anderson said of Tampa Bay. “If we would have won, it might have hurt their (playoff) chances, but now they’re right back in it.” After Bergfors opened the scoring 3:22 into the game, goals by St. Louis, Stamkos and Szczechura gave Tampa Bay a 3-1 lead after one period. The Thrashers have been outscored 71-50 in the first this season. St. Louis tied it at 8:47 before Stamkos made it 2-1 with 6:54 left in the period from the left circle during a power play. Szczechura extended the Lightning advantage to 3-1 on his first goal in 29 games at the 17-minute mark. St. Louis also had two assists, and has 11 goals and 15 assists over his last 17 games. Armstrong cut the Thrashers’ deficit to 3-2 at 13:37 of the second. Purcell got the goal back on a penalty shot with 3:24 to go in the period. Lecavalier and Stamkos had a third-period goals. NOTES: Thrashers LW Evander Kane (notes) left during the second with a foot injury, which resulted from blocking a shot. … Tampa Bay LW Ryan Malone (notes) , a member of the U.S. Olympic team, has no ...
